Race 2008

Abstract

Race 2008: Critical Reflections on an Historic Campaign brings together a diverse group of scholars and activists to examine the gendered politics, images, rhetorical practices, and racial/ethnic conflicts that served as a backdrop to this momentous election. It features perspectives marginalized or ignored by mainstream media and political pundits, thus providing alternative, critical insights on the social dynamics fueling campaign rhetoric, grassroots activism, and intergroup conflicts in 2008 and beyond.

About the Author

Myra Mendible is Professor and Chair in the Language and Literature department at Florida Gulf Coast University. Her interdisciplinary scholarship explores links between national politics, popular culture, gender, and ethnicity. Mendible's work has appeared in a range of peer-reviewed national and international journals, including Peace Review, Radical Psychology, International Fiction Review, Genders, Feminist Media Studies, Cultural Critique, and others. She is the Editor of From Bananas to Buttocks: The Latina Body in Popular Film and Culture (University of Texas Press, 2007) and the recipient of a Postdoctoral Fellowship by the American Association of University Women. Her monograph, Putdowns and Showdowns: American Culture and the Politics of Humiliation, is under contract with Edwin Mellon Press.
