Basic Genetics

A Primer Covering Molecular Composition of Genetic Material, Gene Expression and Genetic Engineering, and Mutations and Human Genetic Disorders, 2nd Edition

by Ahmed Abouelmagd & Hussein M. Ageely

05/09/2013

Basic Genetics is a concise introductory textbook that focuses not only on understanding and explaining the main points of genetics, but also upon covering the required essential traditional subjects in the field. The main goal of this textbook is to help first year students who are taking their first course in human genetics to understand the different topics within genetics. It is of particular interest for those who are preparing themselves to study medicine or other medical sciences. This textbook presents only the essential required information. Some of the different subjects included in the eight chapters are: cell cycle and cellular division, Mendelian principles of heredity, the molecular basis of genetic material, gene expression and gene expression control, genetic variations an...

The high degree of heterogeneity of textile composites was found to be the primary problem in analysis and testing. A concept was developed based on a description of the local variation of the material stiffness matrix using a spline interpolation. The role of this stiffness function is to facilitate the calculation of the material stiffness matrix at any given position or for arbitrary domains in the form of finite elements.Based on this approach, two different methods were developed. In the first method the average material stiffness matrix is calculated for a finite element and subsequently the elemental stiffness matrix of this element is assembled. In the second approach the elemental stiffness matrix is calculated directly using the local material stiffness at the integration points ...

Global Warming for Dim Wits

A Scientist's Perspective of Climate Change

by James R. Barrante

03/19/2010

Human beings are not very bright. The power output of the human brain is about 40 watts, and that is indeed pretty dim. We definitely are all dim wits. This book was written for dim wits – from one dim wit to another, as they say. Its primary purpose is to address the controversy affectionately known as global warming. Written by a physical scientist with over 40 years of teaching experience, the book contains very little personal opinion, has no political agenda, and is loaded with well-documented and scientifically tested facts concerning the greenhouse gases and climate change. It contains material that you will want to share with your children. Global Warming for Dim Wits is written in simple language. Every attempt has been made to present the material in a way that the average p...

The purpose of this book is to examine the birth of bilateral strategic arms control between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Johnson Administration, from 1964 to 1969. It is about the time and the place of the birth of bilateral strategic arms control as it came about in the United States through the efforts of President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara in the 1960s. This is the time of the birth of what quickly came to be known as SALT, or the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. This inquiry firstly considers whether the move towards bilateral strategic arms control was institutional or personal. It then looks for the motivating factors: both theoretical and substantive. As few things have only a single cause, it is likely that we shall find th...

Topographic Mapping

Covering the Wider Field of Geospatial Information Science & Technology (GIS&T)

by John N. Hatzopoulos

01/31/2008

This book is addressed to students and professionals and it is aimed to cover as much as possible the wider region of topographic mapping as it has been evolved into a modern field called geospatial information and technology. More emphasis is given to the use of scientific methods and tools that are materialised in algorithms and software and produce practical results. For this reason beyond the written material there are also many educational and professional software programs written by the author to comprehend the individual methodologies which are developed. Target of this book is to provide the people who work in fields of applications of topographic mapping (environment, geology, geography, cartography, engineering, geotechnical, agriculture, forestry, etc.) a source of knowledge fo...

Ten vibrocores were collected from the outer, middle and inner part of the tidal flats off Busum (German North Sea coast) to identify the gradual changes in sediment composition and sedimentary structures due to their location and input of hydrodynamic energy. The outer part of the investigation transect includes Tertiussand and D-Steert, the middle part is the huge sandbank of the Bielhovensand and the inner part comprises the Meldorf bight. The study turned out that the facies in the outer part is dominated by sandy material and the bedding types mainly are small scale cross bedding and massive sand. The facies of the middle part is characterized by a mixing of sandy and muddy material which results predominately in flaser bedding. The sediments of the inner part are characterized by si...

09/15/2007

In many cases, the beginning engineering student is thrown into upper-level engineering courses without an adequate introduction to the basic material. This, at best, causes undue stress on the student as they feel unprepared when faced with unfamiliar material, and at worst, results in students dropping out of the program or changing majors when they discover that their chosen field of engineering is not what they thought it was. The purpose of this text is to introduce the student to a general cross-section of the field of electrical and computer engineering. The text is aimed at incoming freshmen, and as such, assumes that the reader has a limited to nonexistent background in electrical engineering and knowledge of no more than pre-calculus in the field of mathematics. By exposing s...

The format of Essential Human Histology departs considerably from that of the usual presentations on human tissue/organ biology. This presentation was not designed as a formal reference textbook but as a tool solely for students and is designed for rapid student learning as well as rapid review in preparation for USMLE examinations. Essential Human Histology focuses the beginning student’s attention on the most important aspects of this discipline which are presented as a series of learning units. In general, the text follows the traditional and logical sequence of cells to tissues to organs, but within this sequence, the discussion on mitosis is presented immediately after the cell and discussion on meiosis just prior to a consideration of the reproductive systems. To understand human s...

Young stars are surrounded by massive, rotating disks of dust and gas, which supply a reservoir of material that may be incorporated into planets or accreted onto the central star. In this dissertation, I use high angular resolution observations at a range of wavelengths to understand the structure, ubiquity, and evolutionary timescales of protoplanetary disks. First, I describe a study of Class I protostars, objects believed to be at an evolutionary stage between collapsing spherical clouds and fully-assembled young stars surrounded by protoplanetary disks. I use a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to model new 0.9 micron scattered light images, 1.3 mm continuum images, and broadband spectral energy distributions. This modeling shows that Class I sources are probably su...

The aim of this book is to provide a simple and useful introduction for the fresh students into the vast field of numerical analysis. Like any other introductory course on numerical analysis, this book contains the basic theory, which in the present text refers to the following topics: linear equations, nonlinear equations, eigensystems, interpolation, approximation of functions, numerical differentiation and integration, stochastics, ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Because the students need to quickly understand why the numerical methods correctly work, the proofs of theorems were shorted as possible, insisting more on ideas than on a lot of algebra manipulation. The included examples are presented with a minimum of complications, emphasizing the st...

(Dissertation is written in Spanish.) Using PSpice of MiscroSim to simulate power converters sometimes brings awkward complications such as the simulation of real magnetic components. It deals a little bit of work to bring a good agreement between experimental and simulated results. Simulation with linear inductors or transformers does not produce good results. The reason is that real magnetic components present saturation and hysteresis, a phenomenon that characterises magnetic materials. The hysteresis or B-H loop of a magnetic component is highly dependent on frequency, waveform (not very important for ferrite material), temperature, excitation level, etc. Although PSpice includes in its magnetic library a list of non-linear components, rarely these parameters are coincident with our w...

Behind the Shield

Anti-Riot Operations Guide

by A. Hunsicker

08/18/2011

The worldwide number of incidents involving civil disturbances, public unrests, demonstrations, uprisings, and riots is increasing by the minute. Each incident presents an ever-demanding challenge for law enforcement and security professionals. A detailed and understandable manual for security enforcement and riot control professionals is a priority, and the answer to those challenging situations. Any professional actively, directly, or indirectly engaged in crowd control operations, novice or veteran, whether in a unit or as team leader, must train for and be able to pinpoint even the most unexpected security concerns. Behind the Shield contains carefully selected and illustrated material for the crowd control, law enforcement, and security professional. All of the available training a...

Recovering Argument

A Guide to Critical Thinking and Writing

by Richard E. Mezo

07/15/1999

Recovering Argument is a textbook or handbook that sounds a revolutionary call to teachers and students of rhetoric, asking, as it implicitly does, for a return to reason as the basis of all argument. The implied purpose of the book is to recover argument from its current status among teachers, who often view composition as a merely personal exercise, with an emphasis upon "invention" (now the most important part of so-called "process" writing). It attempts to provide a framework for understanding discourse and its position and function in a democratic society. In addition to calling for a return to reason, Recovering Argument suggests new models and approaches to the teaching of writing. A model of communication (a "humanistic" model) is offered as a replacement for the widely-accept...

Problems in Organic Chemistry

A Self-Study Guide

by David Horn and Michael Strauss

09/25/2013

Problems in Organic Chemistry: A Self-Study Guide is the only undergraduate organic chemistry book to use a lead oriented-incremental approach. It aids and reinforces learning by encouraging students to connect sometimes disparate facts and theories in order to solve problems. The approach uniquely complements the lecture material by building concepts sequentially within a problem-solving context. The book is organized into three major sections: problems; lead-oriented cumulative verbal statements; and detailed solutions with structures and in-depth explanations.

On Your Own, NORTH CAROLINA SMALL CLAIMS COURT

A Debt Collection Guide For North Carolina Businesses

by Mary Anne Nixon

04/27/1998

If you are interested in representing yourself or your business in Small Claims Court in North Carolina in order to collect your debts or settle disputes, ON YOUR OWN - NORTH CAROLINA SMALL CLAIMS COURT is the book for you! Employing an attorney to represent you or your business may or may not make economic sense. The debt you are seeking to recover may be less than the fee charged by an attorney. While it may be economically desirable for an attorney to represent you or your business in Small Claims Court in some situations, you may find it more advantageous to represent yourself or your business ON YOUR OWN. An individual or business with a small claim may wish to pursue the indebtedness without an attorney, but may not possess sufficient knowledge about the way the court operates to ...

Aerial spectral imaging is being developed with the aim of monitoring natural resources like coastal areas, forestry and extensive crops. The information contained in hyperspectral images allows the reconstruction of the energy curve radiated by the terrestrial surface throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Hence, the characterization, identification and classification of the observed material from their spectral curve is an interesting possibility. Pattern recognition methods have proven to be effective techniques in this kind of applications. In fact, classification of...
