This book reviews natural health product laws and regulations for Canada's primary natural health products (NHP) trading partners, namely, Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, USA, United Kingdom, and the European Union and compare them to Canada's natural health product regulations. The study was also undertaken to identify priority areas where policy research should be focussed and then propose strategies to address these selected policy research areas. The Canadian NHP definition was used to compare similar classes of products for these other countries. Further, the major components of the Canadian regulatory framework for NHPs that were used for research purposes were the following: Product Licensing including Standards of Evidence, Site Licensing, Good Manufacturin...

Public Health and Agricultural Biotechnology

A Review of the Legal, Ethical, and Scientific Controversies Presented by Genetically Altered Foods

by Mitchell Berger

06/18/2000

Genetically modified foods present numerous ethical, environmental, health and legal challenges. This report synthesizes information from many websites, scientific journals, newspapers and books that discuss the controversy surrounding genetically modified foods. The author has attempted to show that although the future applications of agrobiotechnology appear promising, the ways in which it is currently being used and regulated should be evaluated with a healthy degree of skepticism.

The style of leadership in an interdisciplinary collaboration is an existing gap in collaborative literature. Studying the leaders in an existing interdisciplinary collaboration provided a description of the leadership style of the collaborative leaders of three behavioral health teams in New York City. This qualitative phenomenological study used structured interviews of interdisciplinary disciplines to describe the leadership style of the collaborative leaders within a team environment. The data collection and analysis were conducted using codes to identify dominant themes. The themes presented perceptions and experiences of three teams interacting collaboratively. The coding process identified five major themes that are unique components of leadership that suggests new methods of buildi...

Towards Healthier Ageing

The Development, Implementation and Evaluation of a Proactive Health Promotion Intervention for Older Adults

by Jason Aaron Fox

07/11/2010

Promoting healthier ageing amongst older adults has never been more important. Most conventional health promotion interventions for older adults take very reactive approaches, typically attempting to minimise specific age-related functional losses. This implies an underlining assumption that such age-related losses are inevitable. However, we know that it is possible to take proactive action to prevent or mitigate negative health events in later life before they occur. Research suggests that proactive coping and future investment strategies may work harmoniously with adaptive definitions of healthy ageing. However, this concept has not been tested as part of a proactive behavioural intervention for a broad perspective of healthy ageing. This research explored the implementation and cont...

Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour

Supportive Interventions for Anti Social Behaviour: Their Use and Effectiveness, Especially on People with Mental Health Problems

by Jayne Mugo

08/29/2012

This dissertation is an evaluative research study of supportive intervention tools for tackling anti-social behaviour implemented by a large housing association, since the Home Office Respect Agenda Action Plan was launched in 2006. The dissertation set out to explore the use and evaluate the effectiveness of supportive interventions as compared to enforcement interventions, and especially where people with mental health problems are involved The phenomenological theoretical underpinning of the research is informed by the philosophy of reaching far beyond the facts to identify the meaning and understanding of social phenomena as the people involved in it perceive experience and interpret it.The research used a mixed method approach. It was based on a quantitative data gathered from the ...

Trillion Dollar Scam

Exploding Health Care Fraud

by Saul William Seidman, MD, FACS

11/01/2008

Fraud is the result of government and insurance company control of health care. The growth of bureaucracy is a precursor to incompetence and soaring costs of medical care. A lack of clinical diagnosis and a dependence on expensive testing has increased costs while decreasing the doctor's competence. The FBI and the attorneys general of all states are dealing with exploding health care fraud. The result is a trillion dollars in waste and deception. Trillion Dollar Scam details the origin of this fraud and waste, and offers solutions to fixing the broken U.S. health care system.

Healing Honey

A Natural Remedy for Better Health and Wellness

by Lynne Chepulis

10/29/2008

Too much sugar can be bad for our health. Not only can it make us overweight and sluggish, but it can also contribute to many diseases including diabetes, atherosclerosis, and vascular disease. But what can we do? Sugar is everywhere - and the simple truth is that food manufacturers are concerned more about profit than consumer health. As with most things, nature appears to have provided the solution: honey. The medicinal properties of honey have been recognized for literally hundreds of years, but until recently, they have been nothing more than folklore. However, this is beginning to change. Over the last 20-30 years, scientists have discovered that there is real truth to the belief that honey is good for your health. Honey has been revealed to have a high antioxidant content and conta...

by Michael R. McGuire

02/16/2010

Major goals of health care in the 21st century are to make health care more efficient and less costly. These goals can be accomplished by implementation of evidence-based care; greater coordination of patient care; implementation of preventive care and wellness measures; and the evaluation of outcomes of care to identify improved ways to provide care. A universal patient medical record can help achieve these goals of more efficient and less costly health care.

Symbolic Innovations

Lessons from Health Services and Higher Education Organizations

by J. David Johnson

02/22/2017

Organizations are often rewarded for doing the trendy and flashy, as the recent fashionable university efforts related to Massively Open Online Course's demonstrate all too clearly. Innovations demonstrate many things symbolically to external stakeholders: you are on the cutting edge, you are the future, you are worthy of investment, you can respond to competitive pressures, you are attuned to a larger world, and so on. Ultimately, unfortunately, it is often not the work you do, but what your efforts stand for symbolically that is critical to evaluations of work performance. Here we will explore symbolic innovations comprehensively. Studying them provides a more thorough view of innovation processes and the underlying factors that motivate, generate them. Looking at innovations as sym...

Psychiatric Triage and Screening

Trends, Parameters, and Limitations When Evaluating Patients in an Emergency Room Setting

by Malik Abdur-Razzaq

08/08/2011

Numerous societal factors have given rise to acute psychiatric conditions in patients referred for mental health evaluation and treatment at a specified emergency room (ER). Some of these risk factors include homelessness, domestic violence, unemployment, and poverty; acute and recurring mental illnesses; comorbid disorders, and the effects of war as evidenced by soldiers returning home from overseas with signs of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The increase in referrals from correctional facilities, jails, juvenile detention centers, group homes, nursing homes, and schools points to institutions overwhelmed and having difficulty managing their specific populations. As a result, these groups and individuals are referred for psychiatric emergency services. Nurses at the s...

by Mark Robinson

02/01/2000

American business is awakening to the growing importance of its "human capital"-the capabilities, knowledge, experience, wellness, and full potential of its people. In today's increasingly knowledge-based economy, some companies have begun to realize that solutions lie in optimizing their return on investments in employee health by increasing worker productivity. Yet many employers do not realize the relationship of their employees' health to corporate performance. While striving to contain the rising medical costs that put them at a disadvantage against global competitors, they are missing the competitive advantage to be gained from investing wisely in the health-and thereby, the productivity-of their work force. This book was written to help employers create healthy, happy and motivat...

On Hunger

Science, Ethics and Law

by Laura Westra

09/15/2017

On Hunger focuses on the interface between food and public health and on the flawed regulations intended to protect us. Food not only represents nourishment for the body; it also possesses other valuable aspects that are protected by international legal instruments. Westra argues for the importance of effecting radical changes: to protect and improve the present system of food production and distribution. Starting from several reports produced by the FAO and the WHO, Westra argues for the need of a complete and radical re-evaluatio of current practices and systems in order to meet the obligation of the international community to prevent hunger. There is a particular emphasis on the problems facing the poor in the third world, but also the different but equally grave problems of those in ...

The efficacy, consequences and ethical principles surrounding sexual reorientation therapies provided by health professionals has been debated in the public, professional and academic arenas since the first interventions were offered. This thesis applies a model for problem solving in bioethics to the issues raised by this debate. This in depth exploration of the facts and fictions surrounding the provision of sexual reorientation interventions through the critical lens of bioethics will be useful to those patients, health professionals, and health policy makers who struggle to make sense of a highly political health care issue. Sexual reorientation is fraught with conflicting moral and ethical implications that impact the patient and the health professional on many levels. Bioethi...

A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Case Management Activities for Diabetes

A Quasi-Experimental Study from One Medicare Advantage Plan's Perspective

by Felix J. Bradbury

06/18/2010

The economic and human costs of diabetes in the U.S. population place an enormous burden on its healthcare system as well as on employers, diabetics, and their respective families. Many Medicare Advantage plans have responded to this burden by implementing diabetes case management programs (DCMPs) aimed at reducing inappropriate health services utilization, improving health outcomes, and containing costs. While the use of DCMPs is common to many health plans, the research regarding their effectiveness has been sparse or inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to help fill a critical gap in the research literature by evaluating the effect of a diabetes case management program known as CareContact on a Medicare population in Texas. The study population consisted of 2,972 confirmed diabet...

Inevitable Incompetence

Soaring Medical Costs, Dangerous Medical Care

by Dr. Saul William Seidman

03/11/2007

We have two choices. We can follow the delusion of "universal health care" or we can accept a market approach to health care. Putting patients in charge of their medical care is a market approach. It guarantees competence, at least. Universal health care is sickness care administered by politicians, bureaucrats, CEOs and other proven incompetents. None of these "medicrats" knows how medicine is practiced. All these administrators are driven by politics and economics. Excellence is destroyed in the initial stages of what is called "single payer" health care. The destruction of competence follows the destruction of excellence. Medicine was practiced. Medicine was a lifelong learning experience. Medicine was integrated. That was only yesterday. The present bureaucratized, fragmented and disi...

Living under Liberalism

The Politics of Depression in Western Democracies

by Pam Stavropoulos

01/31/2008

Depression is prevalent throughout western society. But while identifying "risk factors," we rarely make the link to the liberal value system which so shapes the society in which we live. Freedom; equality; progress; respect for the "individual." What's wrong with liberalism? As residents of western liberal democracies, aren't we living in the type of society most conducive to happiness? Intellectually, we like to think so. We intone the liberal mantra "rationality defines a person," "my life is up to me," "liberalism is the best there is." But there are parts of ourselves that suspect otherwise, and that remain unconvinced. We become symptomatic. This book challenges individualist readings of depression which are still so dominant in western societies. This is in professional circles an...

Psychology Led Astray

Cargo Cult in Science and Therapy

by Tomasz Witkowski

08/01/2016

This book shows how scientific and psychotherapeutic practices change into worthless rituals called by the famous physicist, Richard Feynman, "cargo cult." It is a must-read for everybody who is interested in psychology, who is studying or intends to study it, but also for present and potential clients of psychotherapists and parents of mentally-disabled children. Readers will learn which parts of psychology and therapy are cargo-cult-like and which are reliable. This book is the second part of trilogy devoted to the dark side of psychology. The first volume was published under the title Psychology Gone Wrong: The Dark Sides of Science and Therapy, also released by BrownWalker Press.
