Science, God and the Nature of Reality

Bias in Biomedical Research

by Sarah S. Knox

11/04/2010

This philosophy of science book is written by a biomedical scientist for a lay audience but is well-referenced for use by scientific readers and college course curricula. Its thesis is that the current paradigm in the biological and medical sciences, which is responsible for rejecting the existence of a Divine Being, is outdated. There is no factual basis for creating a dichotomy between evolution and Divine Design. Misconceptions about the nature of reality, i.e., the belief that matter is the ultimate cause of everything we think, feel, say, and do, have made it easy to ignore data demonstrating an important biological role for the energetic aspects of matter and to leave the question of the existence of a Divine being to the purview of philosophy and religion. The author uses extensive ...

by Niall Shanks and C. Ray Greek

10/06/2009

The central concern of this book is with the "prediction problem" in biomedical research. In particular, the authors examine the use of animal models to predict human responses in drug and disease research. The arguments discussed are drawn from both biological and biomedical theory (with numerous examples and case studies drawn from evolutionary biology, complex systems theory, oncology, teratology, and AIDS research), and analyses of empirical evidence (concerning, for example, data on intra- and inter-species differences revealed by recent results from genome analyses of various species, human population studies, and statistical studies of the predictive utility of animal models). This book comes to the unique conclusion that while animals can be successfully used for many endeavors in ...

Postures and Movement Patterns of the Human Hand

A Framework for Understanding Hand Activity for Clinicians and Engineers

by Noriko Kamakura, Foreword by Catherine A. Trombly Latham

07/01/2022

Think of the complexity of ordinary hand activity and how to describe it all, both precisely and concisely. The author, a noted occupational therapist in Japan, offers a disciplined approach to doing just that. Whereas research has heretofore been limited mainly to how the hand grips, the methodology here is set up to account for grips, non-grip postures, and movement patterns, based on thousands of laboratory observations. This approach can provide hand experts with specific ways to conceptualize and study hand disabilities, artificial hands, and robotic hands. The author first surveys research over the past 100 years on forms that the hand normally assumes, noting the preponderance of studies on hand grips, with less attention having been paid to what the hand looks like when in non-g...

Foods That Harm, Foods That Promote Health

A Biochemical and Nutritional Perspective in Health and Disease Prevention

by Stefan A. Hulea and Mirela Ahmadi, editors

08/01/2021

This book looks at fresh (fruits and vegetables) and processed foods from a biochemical and nutritional perspective, as well as the relationship between their content in micronutrients and phytochemicals and the major killer diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. The book also pays special attention to two important topics not addressed by other texts on nutrition, namely low-grade systemic inflammation and caloric restriction, which were consistently shown to impact health and disease. Caloric restriction can help in weight reduction programs and in slowing down age-associated degenerative disorders. In contrast to other texts on a similar topic, this book is a blend of nutrition, biochemistry and pathology. More specifically, we discuss the molecular mechanisms in...

A Thinker and Seeker

My Journey To Be a Biomedical Scientist

by Robert A. Floyd

06/01/2021

This book is about the author’s (my) life including my ancestors who came into Colonial America from Northern Ireland in 1746. This book is also about me growing up on the farm. There are episodes given such as the time when I was about 10 years old and had the chore of taking two gallons of skim milk to feed about eight 200 pounds pigs their desert so to speak. On at least one occasion, the pigs surrounded me and ran into the pail of skim milk resulting in me getting a skim milk bath. My educational journey started in a two-room country school where the eighth grade included four girls and me. My educational journey continued through high school, University undergraduate and graduate school where the high light of my learning was the spookiness of quantum physics. My goal began to be r...
